Background & Goals: The client recently purchased a new home and was experiencing flooding inundation in both the backyard and front. They had an existing swale in the backyard that was full of dirt and not draining. The front yard had run-off from the gutter but was going straight into the street gutter. Our goals were to clean the swale and add more river rock, remove invasive weeds and add native plants that could help pull water down into the soil. Replace the front s

Background & Goals: The client recently purchased the house and wanted to add native plants to the front yard where there was a dead-zone. The client wanted large flowering shade bushes as well as pinks and purples. They were also unhappy with the rounded edging and asked for it to be widened and squared.
Outcome: We added 3 large hybrid hydrangeas in the back that will have large whitish green bulbs when flowering. We included native Tiarella, Echinacea, and Amastonia Eastern Blue and the non-native but non-invasive Astilbe. We widened the planting area and squared it off with a beautiful grey stone. Directly after planting we began to see beautiful yellow butterflies and bees!

Background: The client’s yard was struggling aesthetically and ecologically.
Goal: Add native plants that are compatible with the soil, and the client would like to see texture and movement throughout the seasons. They wanted to see more bees and birds when sitting on their porch.
Outcome: We did some soil remediation by adding in Mushroom Compost to add in microorganisms and enhance drainage. Plants include: Muhly Grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris), Gaura lindheimeri (White & Pink Guara), Coreopsis linifolia (Texas Tick Seed), Salvia azurea (Blue Salvia). The day after we planted we began to see hummingbirds!

Background: The garden was under utilized during the pandemic and needed a lot of love. Lindsey Castillo managed many of the garden aspects such volunteer hours, member meetings, member planting days, harvesting and events.
Outcome: Successfully lobbied District 4 to fund GrowNYC for the first time ever. In return, GrowNYC built new beds for the garden. We had 15-20 community garden beds that local members could grow their own organic food. We built a community compost drop off, which was picked up weekly by a local non-profit. Built a children’s garden to be tended by the local kids on the block. Helped secure a $300,000 grant via participatory city funds for installation of water in the garden.
